Border Wings actively support the Great North Air Ambulance

The Great North Air Ambulance Service provides, maintains and improves air ambulance services across our region.

The fastest time, the shortest distance and the best of care from incident to the most appropriate hospital.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service is a registered charity (No. 1092204) established in May 1991 to provide an air ambulance for the then Northumbria Ambulance Service NHS Trust. By 1994 sufficient funds had been generated by the charity, enabling it to purchase the first ever air ambulance helicopter in the North of England.

In addition to public donation, the charity has previously benefited from two main sponsors. The first J-Barbour and Sons provided a large sum, which in addition to public donation facilitated the purchase of the first helicopter. The second sponsor from 1999 until March 2002 was the Automobile Association. Currently we are without a major sponsor.

In July 2002, the charity introduced a second helicopter based at Durham Tees Valley Airport. August 2004 saw the launch of the charity's third aircraft based in Cumbria.

Providing emergency medical cover for the North of England, North Yorkshire and Cumbria an area of approximately 5500 square miles with a population of 3.5 million people, the Great North Air Ambulance has time and time again established the need for an Air Ambulance. As the use of helicopters to transport time critical injured or ill patients to specialised centres becomes the gold standard, it is our aim to provide the best quality of care to the people of the North of England, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.
